Living the Creed After Graduation

I believe that our motto, We Live for Each Other”, expresses the true spirit of fraternity; and that by living this motto my life will be enriched by true friendships and by unselfish service to mankind.

Whenever we had to select the most important part of the creed, that is the part I selected. Not just because it is the part that states our motto, but because it states the part most important to me, “unselfish service to mankind.”

Community service has always been an important aspect of my life, and during recruitment I paid close attention to each sorority’s national philanthropy.  Alpha Delta Pi’s support of the Ronald McDonald House Charities was a large factor in determining the house I would call home. I was so happy to find an organization that shared my philanthropic spirit.  Alpha Delta Pi not only gave me true friendships, but also gave me the tools to continue my philanthropic work long after graduation.

I have continued my involvement with Alpha Delta Pi as an advisor at Beta Eta Chapter, University of Michigan and as an active member of both local alumnae associations – Detroit North and Detroit West. Through these organizations, I have been able to continue to support RMHC and various local philanthropic causes. I am an active member in my church community volunteering with the church choir, as well as supporting the holiday giving tree and winter warming center. I even collect pop tabs and newspaper in my office to make sure my coworkers are empowered to help the community.

Today I am a volunteer mentor with Wining Futures, an award-winning non-profit organization that empowers youth to succeed through mentoring and strategic planning. I began my mentoring career in 2011 and have worked with numerous students in 5 Metro Detroit schools. In 2015 I was named a “Rare Everyday Hero” through the Winning Futures/RARE program which honors everyday people who are changing lives and inspiring people around them.

This past fall I received the Alumni Community Service Award presented by The Oakland University Alumni Association. The award recognizes distinctive service of a humanitarian nature or citizenship through community, public, or OU service activities.

When I joined Alpha Delta Pi and decided that service was a way of life, I didn’t do it thinking about the awards I might receive, and I didn’t have a lot to give. But, there is always someone who needs what you have to give. Whether it’s newspaper or pop can tabs or just an hour a month – you can truly make a difference in someone’s life.

I strive to live the creed every day and am proud of the virtues this sorority instills in its members. How can you continue to live the creed?

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
– 1 Corinthians 13 (KJV)
